Spice up your Marriage and Home Life with DATE NIGHT!

A new smash hit comedy out this month stars SNL’s & 30 Rock’s Tina Fey and The Office’s Steve Carell and is perfect for married couples everywhere. DATE NIGHT is the tale of a suburban couple who have hit the monotony of everyday married life but find a way to save their marriage by spicing things up (although inadvertently) on one of their weekly date nights.

Though the movie is indeed fiction and over the top, it does offer great advice if only by its title alone--Date Night! Every married couple should have regularly scheduled Date Night to keep their passion alive--especially moms! Whether you’re a mom of one child or 12 kids, your role as mom can be all consuming, which over time can lead to a dull, monotonous marriage with the passion fizzled out. You can change that by personally taking the initiative and bringing spice back with a weekly Date Night with you husband!

Think about it for a moment....remember how you and your husband used to be before kids and before marriage? You actually went on dates and spoke to one another thinking each was fascinating! Then life happened, life got busy, and the dates and intrigue faded.

As a relationship coach, I often work with couples who have run into marital trouble yet are actually well matched, they just let their passion fizzle. Advice I give them to bring back that loving feeling indeed includes dating each other again, every week. But ladies, here’s the difference from your single years--don’t expect your husband to put in the effort to do the planning. Take this one on yourself and let him chime in when he wants. Just make it a priority that you and your husband get alone time away from the kids and away from the house each and every week. Oh, and avoid the mistake of the Fosters in the comedy DATE NIGHT--don’t let your Date Nights become as monotonous as your marriage it aims to save. Here are a few ideas to spark your planning for your upcoming date nights:

  1. Go to dinner and a movie. Colleyville’s Cinema Grille is a great choice if you want to eat, drink and watch a movie at the same time.
  2. Go to a concert of a band you loved when you were dating or growing up. 80s and 90s bands often touring lately and Dallas is a frequent stop, from American Airlines Center to House of Blues to Gaylord’s Glass Cactus.
  3. Double date with other couples to help them get out for fun.
  4. Try a new restaurant every week or, if you have your favorite eateries, choose just one new spot a month.
  5. Dress up and go to the theatre or an upscale charity event.
  6. Take dance lessons together -- be it ballroom or salsa.
  7. Go bowling or shoot pool together.
  8. Have special music programmed on your IPod that is just for date night (that is what me and my husband do and everytime he hits play a smile crosses my face because we know it’s our time).
  9. Go to a sporting event together.
  10. Attend a marriage conference at your local church.
There are many things you can dream up for date night. Just don’t let it fall into monotony of the same thing every week. You are looking to bring back that loving feeling you used to share through excitement, adventure and new experiences together. Bringing back the sizzle when it has fizzled not only reignites your marriage but it also improves your home life, makes you a happier Mom, and develops more secure children who know Mom and Dad love each other!

Until next month...
